At the top of each subject in my eLearning site, is a matrix. They look like this (click for a larger view):
Here are my top reasons why matrix’s are a good idea:
1. You are setting up positive attitudes and perceptions. When a student is presented with a clear view of where they are going, and what each step they need to take is, then they are far more likely to succeed. They can focus on achieving, and ‘walk’ confidently through the subject.
2. Having this information available to students also help them to self assess, and self monitor. They are now aware of exactly what they will be learning, and can decide how much time this subject will need, and how much weight each learning outcome will be given. Critical thinking, is a vital skill that many students lack, but it can be developed through something as simple as a matrix.
3. It’s easy to understand. Using the matrix format, as opposed to a paragraph of written text, is a lot easier for students to find the information that they need, and use it. For example, if someone is half way through a subject, and they come back the next day, and want to work in their workbook, all they have to do is locate the right learning outcome on the left, and then follow the matrix to know what page of the workbook to use.
4. Preparedness for exams. Each student now knows, from looking at the matrix, that they will be assessed in five different areas. As long as they feel they understand each area (and in my particular eLearning environment, they can assess this through quizes), then they can confidently address their exam.
5. It helps you be a ‘guide of the side‘, not a ’sage on the stage’. It is true; one of the major aspects of eLearning, from a teacher’s perspective, is the effect it has on how we ‘teach’. We are meant to present our students with information, and FACILITATE their learning, not shove information down their throughts. This matrx is a good example of how we can give them building blocks to create their knowledge.

Great post, and a great idea to include this in an e-learning site.
Also, having a matrix provides a schematic framework for the student, preparing them for what is going to be covered.
