Snooki’s campus talk sparks call for new law

If you think the price for her Q&A session is outrageous, wait until you see who Snooki beat out.

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, star of MTV’s reality series “Jersey Shore,” received $32,000 to speak at Rutgers University for two sold-out shows. That’s $2,000 more than last year’s guest speaker, Toni Morrison.

Among the topics on which Polizzi held court:

  • Her hair (“The poof is its own living thing”)
  • Her beauty regimen (weekly purchases of hairspray and bronzer)
  • Her family (“They don’t like seeing me hook up on TV, but I’m 23 years old, they have to get over it.”), and
  • Her secondary career as an author (“I wanted to write a novel because I’m smart, I went to school to be a vet tech.”).

The night wasn’t all about Snooki, though – she also judged a “best abs at Rutgers” contest and taught 10 students how to dance to house music during the show.

But not everyone is happy with the MTV star’s appearance – and some are flat-out outraged, including State Senator Joe Kyrillos, who says students attending public colleges shouldn’t be required to fund entertainment they find objectionable through mandatory activity fees.

He plans to introduce legislation to prevent such funding in the future.

Meanwhile, Rutgers students horrified at the Snooki-level quality of speakers have launched a Facebook page calling on Jersey favorite Bruce Springsteen to speak (for free, they hope). As of this writing, 4,600 students have signed up.
