Many schools are re-examining their sexual harassment policies in light of important new guidance from the feds.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Education issued new guidance regarding sexual harassment in the education setting. The “Dear Colleague” letter to federally funded institutions explained Title IX requirements and described efforts schools can take to prevent sexual harassment and violence.
Many schools are taking notice, and some have moved to revise sexual harassment policies in light of the new guidance. For example, The Washington Post reports that the University of Virginia is in the process of making changes to its policy, partly in response to the DOE missive. The university plans to expand the meaning of “sexual misconduct” and lower the standard of proof in harassment cases, the Post said.
